Welcome to Pack 170

We are excited to welcome your family to Cub Scout Pack 170!

Cub Scouting is a family program that helps youth build character, citizenship, leadership, and confidence through fun activities and outdoor adventures. We know there can be a lot of new information when joining scouts, so this page is intended to answer some of the most common questions new families have.

Most importantly, don’t worry about learning everything at once. Show up, have fun, ask questions, and enjoy the adventure.

How Pack 170 Works

Den Meetings

Most Monday evenings are den meetings.

Scouts are grouped by grade into dens. During den meetings, scouts work on adventures, games, crafts, outdoor skills, and activities appropriate for their age level. Most advancement takes place during den meetings.

Pack Meetings

Several times throughout the year, all of the dens come together for Pack Meetings.

Pack Meetings are family-oriented events that may include games, awards, ceremonies, skits, special guests, or other activities. Families are encouraged to participate and join the fun.

Meetings and Activities

Pack 170 generally meets during the school year from September through June.

In addition to regular meetings, we hold activities throughout the year, including:

Camping trips
Hiking
Fishing
Archery
BB Shooting
Pinewood Derby
Scouting for Food
Service projects
Visits to police, fire, and EMS organizations
Holiday parties and special events

Uniforms

One of the most common questions from new families is, “What should my scout wear?”

For regular Monday den meetings, a scout uniform is not required.

Many new scouts attend several meetings before purchasing a uniform, and that is completely fine.

The official Cub Scout uniform is generally worn for:

Pack Meetings
Award ceremonies
Pinewood Derby
Scout Sunday
Other special scouting events

Pack 170 also offers Class B Pack t-shirts that are frequently worn for camping trips, hikes, service projects, and outdoor activities.

Uniform pants are optional. Any long pants or shorts with belt loops work well.

If obtaining a uniform creates a financial hardship, please contact the Cubmaster or Committee Chair. Assistance and gently-used uniforms may be available.

Parents and Family Participation

Cub Scouting is designed to be a family program.

Parents are encouraged to participate in meetings, campouts, hikes, service projects, and other activities. All of our leaders started as parents who simply wanted to help their child have a great scouting experience.

No prior scouting experience is required.

Advancement and the Bobcat Rank

One of the first things new scouts work on is earning their Bobcat rank.

This is completed with the help of parents and introduces scouts to important Cub Scout traditions, including the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Sign, Scout Salute, Scout Handshake, and the Cub Scout motto.

Parents can also help scouts complete adventures and activities at home throughout the year.

Financial Assistance

Pack 170 never wants finances to prevent a scout from participating.

If membership fees, uniforms, camping equipment, or activity costs create a hardship, please contact the Cubmaster or Committee Chair privately. Assistance may be available.
