Pinewood Derby 2012

A great time was had by all at last week’s 2012 incarnation of the Pinewood Derby. It is certainly a right of passage for all cub scouts and this year was no exception. Thanks to those that volunteered with everything from the car check-in and setting up the track the night before through the food, games, and timing the day of. Everything ran very smoothly (at least it looked that way from my perspective on the outside), and everyone had lots of fun. Tonight we get to close this chapter with finding out the grand champion so it isn’t quite over yet.

Enjoy these photos from race day.

New Verison of Campout Overview

I’ve tweaked the agenda a bit to be a little more fun:

  • Welcome early Saturday morning so it won’t interrupt the fun later in the day
  • Split the fishing and hiking belt loops to have a smaller group (10) in each session – more 1-1 time
  • Big group games are now during free time so folks can chill out instead of playing the game if they like
  • Move up the flag lowering and campfire start

Also, if you love to fish, let me know – I’ve got a little job for you.

Camping Forms Available

I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some camping! I’ve posted a draft Overview/Agenda of the Fall 2011 Campout to the Forms page of the website, as well as all the health and permission forms you need – most everyone should have these filled out already. On that same page is a Registration Form - please print that off, fill it out, and bring it with a check for the fees to the next den meeting. The fees are really simple this time: $10 per family and $5 per person for food. Also, Granger Lake is a great spot for fishing and hiking/birding, so bring your gear and earn a belt loop or two. If you have any questions, email or call Darren Richmond (darrenrichmond@gmail.com 512-431-8001).

Fall Campout November 12 & 13

It’s that time of year again – time for our Fall Campout! We’ll be camping at Granger Lake in the Willis Creek park (see map). We’ll be posting more here and talking to you at den meetings, but here are some of the activities we have planned that we need volunteers to help with. Please email Darren Richmond (darrrenrichmond@gmail.com) if you can help with any of these or have additional suggestions:

  • Belt Loops: Fishing, Volleyball, Hiking
  • Games: Sharks vs. Minnows, Infection, FFEACH, Band Aid Tag
  • Flameless Campfire (burn ban): Griddle Smores, Flashlight Campfire, Songs, Chants, Stories
  • Food: Sloppy Joes or Tacos (we have electric plugs for electric griddles)
All adults must have Youth Protection Training completed before going camping. If you went through YPT last year, you are covered.
More to come!

Webelos Woods 2011

This past weekend, 9 Webelos from both the 1 and 2 patrols were hosted by Boy Scout Troop 202 at the North Shore District’s Webelos Woods campout. It was a great chance to meet the Boy Scout troops in the area and get at least a little bit of an idea about what troop they will want to cross over into come the spring of their 5th grade year. For some of our Cub Scouts, that time is fast approaching. For others, it is still a bit over a year away. But regardless of the time until cross over, it was a fun weekend and promises to be a rewarding way to start their Boy Scouting career.

And of course pictures were taken.

Meetings – where and when?

For the 2011-2012 school year, the Pack170 Den meetings will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Whitestone Blvd. They last about one hour. All are welcome!

On Thursday, September 15 we will be holding our Rodeo Roundup. This is a recruiting drive and we would love to have you attend. Please show up with all of your questions and we will be happy to answer them. In addition all of the things needed to sign up for Cub Scouts will be on hand so bring your kids for some friendly competition and fun for all.

All of these events take place at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on 1431 just west of 183 (across the street from Bush’s chicken).
